Theekshana, Hasaranga spin Sri Lanka to victory

Published

on

Maheesh Theekshana dealt Scotland some big blows
Sri Lanka may have had some cause to worry when they were bowled out for 245 in the 50th over.
But as good as their batting has been in this tournament – until this game, at least – their bowling has been the best on show.
Wanidu Hasaranga didn’t get a five-wicket haul this time, but between them, he and Maheesh Theeshana buried the Scotland batting order – Theekshana claiming 3 for 41, Hasaranga 2 for 42.
With the seamers pitching in, and a couple of run outs to finish, Sri Lanka strode to a 82-run victory. None of their matches in this group stage have been close. Though there remains some embarrassment about having to play a Qualifying tournament at all, as a former ODI World Cup champion, Sri Lanka will take some satisfaction from being the side best-placed ahead of the Super Six. They will take four vital points into that stage, in addition to the tournament’s best Net Run Rate (NRR) of 3.047.
Scotland have also qualified for the next stage, having won three matches and lost only this one, while maintaining a NRR of 0.540. The Super Six matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies are likely to decide their fate.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers have been imperious in this tournament, and this match was no exception, as they reduced the opposition to 6 for 74 on a sluggish Bulawayo track, inside the first 16 overs. This essentially threw Scotland out of the game. Chris Greaves struck an unbeaten 56 from No. 7, but the target always seemed beyond Scotland, with Sri Lanka’s bowlers having dominated right through their innings.
Seamer Lahiru Kumara had made the first breakthrough, uprooting Matthew Cross’ middle stump with a jagging, length delivery. Then the spinners piled on. Theekshana took out Brandon McMullen’s middle stump, before having Richie Berrington caught athletically at slip by Dhananjaya de Silva soon after. Later, Hasaranga would have opener Christopher McBride caught at short cover, before having Mark Watt lbw.
When Theekshana had Jack Jarvis lbw to leave Scotland 100 for 8, it was all over. Greaves would need a miracle to take Scotland towards victory; he merely produced a very good innings, and saw his last two partners run out. Scotland were all out in the 29th over.
Brief scores
Sri Lanka 245 all out i n 50 overs (Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka 63; Chris Greaves 4-32) beat Scotland 163 all out in 29 overs (Chris Greaves 56*;  Maheesh Theekshana 3-41, Wanidu Hasaranga 2-42) by 82 runs

Half a million people join protests in France, but some turn violent

An estimated 550,000 people took part in demonstrations across France today to protest against teaching conditions in schools, rising fuel prices and the cost of living.

Marches were largely peaceful and took place in several major French cities, including Paris, where 110,000 people attended.

“We just want to study, we just want a future” one student taking part in the protest in the capital told BBC News, while another said they were ” just trying to make things change”.

But French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said some groups “at the margins of these protests” caused the situation to “degenerate”.

According to the French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, 1200 people were arrested.  Officials also reported looting in cities such as Marseille, where masked 8ntruders also entered the city hall.  In Lyon, the tourist office was set on fire  and shops were damaged.

French President Emmanuel Macron said any vandals and looters would be “prosecuted and punished”, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of left-wing party La France Insoumise, said demonstrations had been calmly mobilised.

Meanwhile, firefighters are continuing to battle a blaze at Limoges City Hall after a reported break-in and arson inside the 19th-century building during protests there.

Deadly fire breaks out at Canada military base

Defence Minister David McGuinty says there are casualties but did not go into details (BBC)

A large fire near a Canadian military base in Alberta has killed and injured some people, the defence minister said, without confirming the number of casualties.

The Canadian Armed Forces were working with local authorities to manage the fire and were looking into what caused it, David McGuinty said, describing the situation as “very, very active and delicate”.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said on X that a “serious incident creating a major fire” had occurred, adding his “thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected”.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, where the fire broke out, is one of the country’s busiest military training bases.

The blaze “spread rapidly due to high winds” and had torn through the fences of the base, the Municipal District of Wainwright said.

McGuinty told reporters he “cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory”.

It is unclear when the fire broke out, but the district first posted about the incident at about 17:30 local time.

Local authorities have urged residents to avoid the area and give all emergency vehicles right of way.
