Showers in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the afternoon

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy showers about 50mm are likely at some places.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in North Central and Uva provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Mannar districts during the afternoon or night.

Winds will be south-easterly to south-westerly and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the Sri Lanka is likely to  intensify into a depression during next 12 hours. This system is expected to move west-orthwestwards,
towards the east coast of the island. Hence, showery condition over the island, particularly in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces is expected to enhance from
January 8th.

Showers will occur at times in the Uva province and in Batticaloa, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Matale and Hambantota districts. Fairly Heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern province and in Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere in the Island after 1.00 p.m.

Strong winds about 50 kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-central, North-western and Eastern provinces and in Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The low-level atmospheric disturbance in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the Sri Lanka has intensified into a low-pressure area. Hence, showery condition over the island, particularly in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces is expected to enhance from January 8th.

Showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central, Uva, North-Central and Northern provinces. Heavy showers about 100 mm are likely at some places in Uva province and in Nuwara-Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere in the Island after 1.00 p.m.

Advisory for low pressure area over South-east Bay of Bengal Sea area

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory at 11.30 pm on 05 January 2026 regarding a low pressure area over South-east Bay of Bengal Sea area.

The low-level atmospheric disturbance in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the Sri Lanka has intensified into a low-pressure area.

Hence, showery condition over the island, particularly
in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces is expected to enhance from January 8th.

The Meteorological Department is constantly monitoring the behavior of the system.

The general public are requested to be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regards.
