Yupun, Dhanushka, Ushan top SL performers in the centenary year

In a year marred by cancellations of multiple international events due to Covid 19 pandemic, sprinter Yupun Abeykoon’s 9.96 seconds dash in the 100 metres in Switzerland stood out as Sri Lanka’s most outstanding track and field performance of the year as South Asia witnessed its first sub ten seconds performer in the sport’s most glamorous discipline.

In the men’s category the Italy-based sprinter was the top-ranked Sri Lankan in the track and field sports in the centenary year and the next two athletes in the list, namely, the long jumper Dhanushka Sandaruwan and high jumper Ushan Thivanka too thrived overseas.

Abeykoon ended a long wait for a track and field medal for Sri Lanka at a major multisport event when he clinched the bronze medal of the men’s 100 metres at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. It was the icing on the cake for the 27-year-old, who completed a dramatic year by taking under his name several national records.

Abeykoon, who will celebrate his birthday on new year’s eve, improved the 100 metres national record twice this year. The 9.96 seconds feat which he achieved in July is also the fastest performance by an Asian in the 100 metres this year. He was also the only Sri Lankan sprinter to clock sub 21 seconds in the 200 metres in the passing year.

Despite the rise of Abeykoon as a potential Asian Games medal winner, the country’s chances of fielding a strong relay team for the regional event disappeared as the former national record holder Himasha Eshan was slapped with a four-year ban in August for a doping violation he is alleged to have committed in 2021.

US-based athletes Danushka Sandaruwan and Ushan Thiwanka are the next highest-ranked Sri Lankan male athletes in 2022. The 2019 Asian Championship participant Sandaruwan produced an 8.03 metres long jump feat in June. Although it was not enough to secure a top position in Asia, the feat augurs well for the sport as Sandaruwan has cleared a huge mental barrier with that feat beyond the eight metres. It is the best performance by a Sri Lankan since Janaka Prasad’s 8.07 metres  (+2.0) feat in 2019 in the men’s long jump.

High jumper Thiwanka made a promising start in March with a feat of 2.27 metres, a performance that elevated him to the 14th position in the world by April. However, a number of issues prevented him from making it to the Sri Lanka teams. At the end of the year, Thiwanka is among the top ten in the Asian rankings.

The supremacy in the men’s 400 metres was shared by Kalinga Kumarage and Aruna Dharshana who both clocked sub-46 seconds. At present Kumarage is ranked eighth in Asia while Dharshana is ranked 13th.Triple jumper Shreshan Dhananjaya, javelin thrower Sumedha Ranasinghe, triple jumper Chamal Kumarasiri, hurdler Roshan Ranatunga and long jumper Pathum Bandara Herath are the other highest-ranked Sri Lankan male athletes this year.

With his outstanding 9.96 seconds feat sprinter Abeykoon has provided track and field sports a rare platform to reinvigorate in its centenary year. However, it remains to be seen whether the authorities would capitalize on it. It is the first major breakthrough for local athletics since Olympic medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe’s retirement.

‎The St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo player produced a commanding performance in the girls’ singles final, defeating fellow Sri Lankan Yuhansa Peiris 4-1, 4-1 to secure the title. The victory marked another significant achievement for one of the country’s leading junior players.

‎According to family sources, the tournament is expected to be Dinara’s final ITF Junior event on Sri Lankan soil, making the title triumph a memorable farewell appearance before she turns her attention to competitions abroad.

‎In the boys’ singles final, S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia player Aahil Kaleel battled back strongly to defeat India’s Chauhan Shiok 4-5, 4-0, 10-6 in an entertaining contest. Rumesh’s Rome heroics a watershed moment for Sri Lankan Athletics

Rumesh Tharanga in action in Rome.

Sri Lanka’s former national javelin record holders Sachith Maduranga and Waruna Lakshan Dayaratne have hailed Rumesh Tharanga’s historic performance at the Rome Diamond League as a defining moment for Sri Lankan athletics, saying it has shattered long-standing misconceptions about the country’s ability to compete with the world’s best.

‎Tharanga produced a stunning world-leading throw of 92.62 metres at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea meeting in Rome, setting a new meet record and becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a Diamond League event.

‎Former national record holder Sachith Maduranga described the achievement as a watershed moment that had broken a number of myths which had prevented Sri Lankan athletes from believing they could excel at the highest international level.

‎”He has taken the javelin to a totally new level,” Maduranga said in an interview with The Island from Australia.

‎Reflecting on Tharanga’s early days in the sport, Maduranga recalled the confidence and determination displayed by the athlete from a young age.

‎”In one of his first encounters with me, he said that he would definitely break my junior record,” Maduranga said.

‎The former Asian Championships medallist revealed that after Tharanga’s impressive performances as a junior athlete, he strongly encouraged him to seek overseas training opportunities. Maduranga said he, together with a former president of Sri Lanka Athletics, had urged Tharanga to follow a similar path to the one that helped him secure success at the continental level.

‎However, Tharanga remained committed to working under his long-time coach Tony Prasanna.

‎”But he insisted that he would continue to train with his coach Tony Prasanna. Now he has proven that the knowledge of his local coach was enough to beat the world. This is phenomenal,” Maduranga said.

‎Former national record holder Waruna Lakshan Dayaratne also praised Tharanga’s remarkable achievement, joining the growing chorus of admiration for a performance that has elevated Sri Lankan athletics to unprecedented heights.

‎Tharanga’s Rome triumph has not only rewritten the record books but has also provided compelling evidence that world-class success can be achieved through dedication, talent and high-quality coaching available within Sri Lanka. His achievement is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes to dream bigger and challenge the world’s elite on the global stage. (RF)

Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the new BCB president following the elections held in Dhaka on Sunday. Tamim was the only candidate, and he will serve a four-year term in total, having already completed two months as the ad-hoc committee’s head.

The Bangladesh government called for BCB elections under the interim body in April, following the dissolution of the previous elected body under Aminul Islam.

The day-long election, including physical votes and e-ballots, were held at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, which is also the board headquarters. A total of 23 directors were elected in three categories and two government representatives were announced later to form the 25-member body.

Tamim is one of the most prominent cricketers to have played for Bangladesh, having appeared in 391 internationals across three formats. He led Bangladesh to 21 wins in 38 matches across formats, including the 2-1 ODI series against South Africa in 2022. After his international retirement in early 2025, Tamim continued to play domestic tournaments but a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match that year put an abrupt end to his playing career.

The election commission said 88 votes were cast to elect 23 directors in two out of the three categories. The first category includes all the divisions and districts of the country, the second is the Dhaka clubs that participate in the league system, while the third consists of former cricketers, captains, education boards and others. Tamim was one of twelve directors elected from the second category.

The new 25-member body held an election among themselves to choose the president and two vice-presidents. After Tamim was elected as board president, Fahim Sinha was elected as one of the two vice-presidents. The other vice-president hasn’t been selected.

The previous board elections were held on October 6 last year. Aminul was re-elected BCB president under controversial circumstqnces when Tamim, leading one of the panels, withdrew from the polls alleging Aminul of “bias and malpractice”.
