The UNDP Sri Lanka, through the Green Innovation Challenge supported by HackaDev, has partnered with Curve Up (Pvt) Ltd., a consultancy specializing in ed-tech and community and SME empowerment, to support a promising initiative in Sri Lanka’s organic agriculture sector.

Green Bees, a startup founded by Aruna Dilshan Rajakaruna and Nadeesha Chathurani, aims to revolutionize the organic agriculture industry by producing high-quality, sustainable vermicompost using organic waste and red earthworms. This initiative provides an alternative to conventional fertilizers by harnessing organic waste to create eco-friendly fertilizers.

Vermicompost, rich in essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, is produced through the decomposition of organic waste by red earthworms. Green Bees initially focused on cultivating red earthworms under controlled conditions to ensure their optimal growth and reproduction. This involves maintaining ideal conditions—adequate food, water, and temperature control—to promote their reproduction. Once a sufficient population is established, organic waste is transported to the production site where the earthworms decompose it, resulting in high-quality vermicompost.

This innovative approach offers consumers eco-friendly organic fertilizers that contribute to waste reduction and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. To support this initiative, industry expert Mahendra Peiris provided valuable insights on vermicomposting technology and its application. The Green Bees team is currently assessing the resources needed for vermicomposting tanks, focusing on drainage, ventilation, accessibility, and compliance with environmental regulations and waste management guidelines.

Additionally, the team procured red earthworms from reputable suppliers and introduced them to the production facility to begin the vermicomposting process. They actively monitor the temperature, moisture, and pH levels of the vermicomposting tanks to ensure optimal conditions for vermicompost production.
