‘SpiderNail’ geotechnical concept unveiled in Kandy to strengthen hill country resilience
A biomimicry-inspired geotechnical concept dubbed “SpiderNail”, designed to improve slope stability and reduce infrastructure costs in Sri Lanka’s upcountry, was unveiled at a technical seminar held in Kandy recently, following widespread damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The seminar, titled “Economical Restoration of Cyclone Ditwah Damages – Reinventing Geotechnics for the Protection of Sri Lanka’s Upcountry”, was held on June 12 at the Central Province Governor’s Office with the participation of engineers, scientists, policymakers and young researchers.
It was organised by SoilTech and Kohu Kreations, with a Gen Z-led team presenting a series of innovative engineering concepts aimed at developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solutions for landslide-prone hill country terrain.
Central Province Governor Professor Sarath Abayakoon, a senior geotechnical engineer and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, attended as chief guest.
Around 50 participants representing the Road Development Authority, CECB, Central Environmental Authority, Water Supply Board, provincial institutions and universities took part in the discussions.
At the centre of the seminar was the SpiderNail concept, which draws inspiration from the structural behaviour of spider webs, where loads are redistributed across interconnected strands rather than borne by a single element.
Developers of the concept said it reimagines traditional soil nailing by introducing network-based load distribution using interconnected nails and geometric reinforcement systems, aimed at reducing localised failure and improving slope stability.
They argued that conventional methods such as concrete retaining walls and shotcrete, while effective, are increasingly costly, environmentally intrusive, and dependent on imported materials, placing pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
Preliminary conceptual analysis presented at the seminar suggested that advanced soil nail systems could reduce construction costs by more than 30 per cent compared to conventional retaining structures, while also lowering carbon impact and improving visual integration with natural landscapes.
Speakers stressed that future engineering assessments should go beyond initial construction costs to include lifecycle expenses, environmental impact and maintenance requirements.
In addition to SpiderNail, several complementary concepts—including CrackGuard, AI-based slope monitoring systems, rapid restoration techniques and green slope engineering models—were also presented.
Organisers said the broader objective of the initiative is to demonstrate that locally developed, research-driven engineering solutions can play a central role in addressing Sri Lanka’s infrastructure and disaster resilience challenges.
They added that with further research and field validation, SpiderNail could evolve into a scalable geotechnical innovation with potential international applications.
