Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith says Sri Lanka as a nation is now facing a moral crisis.Speaking at the annual prize giving ceremony of St Nicholas International College, Battaramulla, held at the BMICH recently, the Cardinal said that the Lankan society was infested with corruption, greed for money and thirst for power. “Everyone has forgotten to do the right thing. Justice and fair play are disappearing from among us. Even though Sri Lanka celebrated 75 years of Independence recently, trying to show the world that we are a great country, we are facing a moral crisis. We actually are a nation of beggars pleading to other countries in the world.”

“Our country has fallen into this state due to the grave mistakes committed by the rulers, since Independence.

“From the highest to the lowest, all citizens are only trying to achieve their personal goals with no regard for righteousness,” the Cardinal said.

Among those present were Rector of St Nicholas International College, Rev Fr Camillus Fernando, Director of Catholic Education Rev Fr Gemunu Dias, Prof Ajantha Dharmasiri of the Post Graduate Institute of Management, Rev. Anthony Fernandopulle and Sanjeewa Mendia, former rectors of the college Prof. Hillary Silva, President’s Counsel Shamil Perera.
