PS chief assaults protester provoking teachers
By Rathindra Kuruwita
Teachers and Principals Trade Union Alliance yesterday threatened to intensify their trade union action after K.G. Piyatissa, the Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha assaulted a parent demonstrating in support of the teachers and principals.
Parents were demonstrating opposite many schools across the country asking the government to resolve the long standing salary anomalies of teachers and principals.
“While parents of Mederigama Vidyalaya, Mawanella were demonstrating in support of us, K.G. Piyatissa, the Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradesheeya Sabha and two other councillors chased them away. They assaulted one parent. Then the councillors entered the school and roamed around yelling at the teachers,” Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) general Secretary, Joseph Stalin said.
The unions demanded the law enforcement to take immediate action against the perpetrators. “If they do not take any action against the three men for assaulting people, intimidating them and trying to intimidate teachers, we will intensify our trade union action,” Stalin warned.
