Project to convert discarded barrels into standardized waste bins launched by CEYPETCO and Clean Sri Lanka
On the occasion of World Environment Day today (05), a project to manufacture and distribute standardized waste bins made from discarded barrels was launched in the Muturajawela area by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CEYPETCO).
This initiative is implemented jointly by CEYPETCO and the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.
The barrels have been carefully sorted to separate combustible materials and plastics and converted into waste bins accordingly. Under the first phase of the project, CEYPETCO plans to distribute 150 recycled barrels as waste bins. The organization has also agreed to supply additional bins made from combustible and plastic materials as needed in the future.
Director of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat Isuru Anuradha, along with officials from both the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and CEYPETCO, participated in the event.
Meanwhile, the Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation Limited, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka program, also launched a tree-planting program in the Muturajawela area today, in observance of World Environment Day.
The event was attended by senior officials including CEYPETCO Chairman, D.J.A.S. Rajakaruna, Managing Director Dr. Mayura Neththikumara, Acting Deputy General Manager Samantha Gunawardhana, as well as officials from the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.

Three dead, five injured in head-on collision
A head-on collision, involving a car and a van at Navadankulama, Mundalama, along the Puttalam–Colombo main road, in the early hours of yesterday (12), claimed the lives of three persons and left five others, including a six-year-old child, injured.
The dead were identified as the 26-year-old driver of the car Lahiru Heshan Costa and two passengers – Mary Theresa Costa, 84, and Subhashini Jayasinghe, 58.
The five injured were in the van that came from the direction of Puttalam.
Police said that the driver and the two women succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the Mundalama Hospital.

Five killed, six injured in two accidents
Four persons died in a head-on collision involving a car and a bus at Murasumoddai on the Paranthan-Mullaitivu road yesterday. Police said at the time of the accident, five persons were travelling in the car, of whom four died.
In another accident, one person died and six others sustained injuries when a three-wheeler collided with a car at Oyamaduwa, Anuradhapura. Police identified the dead person as the driver of the three-wheeler.

Rohini Kaviratne appointed chairperson of Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya
Member of Parliament Rohini Kaviratne has been appointed the Chairperson of the Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya, the women’s wing of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
The official appointment letter to Ms Kaviratne was handed over by the Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa yesterday in his office.
The General Secretary of the SJB, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, was also present during the handover. MP Kaviratne, known for her vocal advocacy for women’s rights and education in Parliament, is expected to lead the party’s women’s front in its future political and social initiatives.
