Prof. Ratnasekera re-appointed as VC Uva Wellassa Uni.
Professor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera has been re-appointed the Vice Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University by the President, for a period of three years with immediate effect.
Prof. Ratnasekera has been serving as the Vice Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University from February, 2017.
He had his primary education at Agrabodhi Vidyalaya, Kantale, and secondary education at Nalanda College, Colombo. He graduated from People’s Friendship University, Moscow with a special degree in Chemistry in 1988. Subsequently, in 1993, he obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the same university.
Prof. Ratnasekera has joined the Rajarata University as a Senior Lecturer in August 1996, and was promoted to the post of Professor in Chemistry in 2018. He was the Head of the Department of Physical Sciences of Rajarata University for a period of three years (1996-1999), and the Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences for a period of six years (1999-2005).
His research interests are in the fields of renewable energy sources, environmental chemistry, theoretical chemistry, quality assurance in higher education, science education etc. He was awarded the Presidential Award for Scientific Publications published in the year 2016, and the National Research Council (NRC) Merit Award for Scientific Research published in the year 2017.
Prof. Ratnasekera has contributed for the development of quality assurance activities in the Sri Lankan University sector. He has served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Quality Assurance, University Grants Commission (UGC) for several years, and also served as an International Reviewer in external quality assessments in a number of universities in Bangladesh.

War of words erupts between Minister Chandrasekar and Archchuna in North
A heated argument broke out between Jaffna District MP Archchuna Ramanathan and Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar during the Kilinochchi District Coordination Committee meeting held yesterday (16).
A video footage of the incident shows the MP and the Minister engaging in a heated verbal exchange, following which a physical confrontation appeared to develop when the Minister attempted to grab files reportedly in the possession of MP Ramanathan.
“If you lay a hand on me, I’ll lay a hand on you too… got it?” Ramanathan is heard telling the Minister during the exchange.
Police and officials present at the meeting intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The circumstances that led to the confrontation were not immediately clear.

Cardinal seeks dismissal of Sallay’s petition
Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has filed an intervening petition before the Court of Appeal in connection with a petition filed by former head of the State Intelligence Service, Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, challenging his arrest and detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act over investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks.
The Cardinal has sought permission from the court to make submissions in relation to Sallay’s petition and requested that it be dismissed.
