Out of 225 MPs, so far only one gives up Rs. 33 mn tax exemption

Public Administration Ministry sources said that newly elected lawmaker Madura Withanage had informed that he wouldn’t utilise the duty free vehicle permit he was entitled to.

An MP receives a tax exemption to the tune of Rs. 33 mn.

MP Withanage told The Island that he would soon inform the ministry and Parliament of his decision in writing.

Sources said that Withanage was the only MP so far to have informed the ministry of his decision to forgo a duty free vehicle permit.

 Newcomer Withanage was among 12 SLPPers elected from the Colombo district at the Aug 5, 2020 general election. The former Kotte Mayor polled 70,205 preferential votes.

Asked for an explanation as regards the procedure adopted in respect of the issuance of duty free vehicle permits, sources said that Cabinet approval and that of the President were required. (SF)
