Kapila to be named new Chairman of Selectors
Kapila Wijegunawardene is expected to be named the new Chairman of Selectors, The Island learns. The former fast bowler who held the position from 2015 to 2016 is respected for his forthright approach and integrity.
Given the numerous troubles facing cricket, especially with several corruption investigations involving Sri Lankans being conducted by the International Cricket Council, someone with a clean track record is considered as a must for the post.
Former opening batsman Brendon Kuruppu and former ‘A’ team coach Hemantha Devapriya are expected to be named as members of the selection panel.
Currently, Pramodaya Wickramasinghe and Chaminda Mendis serve the national selection panel after Ashanta de Mel stepped down from the post following the series defeat to England. Wickramasinghe is currently in West Indies as Selector on Tour.
The Sports Ministry has to make the announcement of the new selection panel having obtained recommendations from SLC. Sports Ministry’s National Sports Selection Committee headed by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva has the final say in appointing selectors for all sports bodies.
Meanwhile, a leading cricket club has been inserting pressure to include one of the club’s former cricketers as Chairman of the Selection Committee. This club has been recruiting several prominent cricket players ahead of the current season and a former influential Test captain is believed to be making all the behind the scene moves.
It is said that once the former skipper has control over the Chairman of Selectors it is easier for him to manipulate and promote the club’s players. Earlier, the former captain was busy telling players to go and join Perera Gardens if they intended to play for Sri Lanka. Now he seems to be urging them to come and join Maitland Place where he is a prominent figure.

Sri Lanka pull ahead with Kamindu hundred, Kusal fifty
Kamindu Mendis continued his phenomenal start to Test cricket notching up a fourth Test ton, but a couple of late wickets at the end of play ensured that New Zealand were not completely out of it after an engrossing opening day’s play in Galle.
That one of those wickets was that of Kamindu will have brought the visitors particular joy, though the nature of the wicket – with it spitting out of the rough outside the left-handers off stump, to catch his glove – might give New Zealand’s left-hand heavy batting line-up some pause.
Kamindu’s 114 off 173 was part of two key partnerships, the first worth 72 with Angelo Mathews and the second for 103 with Kusal Mendis. Around those New Zealand did what they do best. They put their best foot forward, set up solid plans, and threw themselves at everything.
It meant Sri Lanka were unable to take complete control of the game having won the toss and elected to bat first on an unusually grass-strewn surface.
William O’Rourke was the pick of the bowlers, grabbing three wickets, including that of both Sri Lanka openers within the first hour of the morning session, while Glenn Phillips was the pick of the spinners with figures of 2 for 52. Mitchell Santner was wicketless, though that was less a reflection of his efforts and more a case of bad luck.
Ramesh Mendis was unbeaten on 14 off 42 at stumps, alongside him was the Prabath Jayasuriya, but this was a day that belonged to Kamindu.
Brief scores:
Sri Lanka 302 for 7 in 88 overs (Pathum Nissanka 27, Dinesh Chandimal 30, Angelo Mathews 36, Kamindu Mendis 114, Kusal Mendis 50; William O’Rourke 3-54, Glenn Phillips 2-52) vs New Zealand

Women’s T20 World Cup winners to get big increase in prize money
The winners of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup that begins on October 3 in the UAE will receive USD 2.34 million in prize money, an increase of 134% over the USD 1 million Australia were awarded for winning the tournament in 2023.
The overall prize pot of USD 7.95 million is also 225% more than the USD 2.45 million on offer in 2023, the ICC announced on Tuesday. The upcoming event is the first in which the ICC will award women equal prize money as men for their respective events, a decision that was taken in June 2023.
The winners of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup – India – were awarded USD 2.45 million earlier this year. The difference between that amount and what the women champions will take home – USD 2.34 million – is down to the difference in the number of matches played by teams during the two events, with the men’s T20 World Cup having 20 participating sides compared to 10 in the women’s event.
The runners-up in the 2024 Women’s World Cup will take home USD 1.17 million in comparison to the USD 500,000 awarded to the losing finalists – South Africa – last year. The two losing semi-finalists in 2024 will earn USD 675,000, an increase from USD 210,000 in 2023. And all ten participating teams in 2024 are assured of earning USD 112,500.
