By Saman Indrajith

JVP trade union wing leader and former MP K.D. Lalkantha has called on all those who want an election to get ready to march on Colombo to force the government to hold the local council polls.

Addressing a JVP-led NPP meeting at Kolonnawa on Tuesday, Lalkantha said: “We now are living in a country where we have to fight to safeguard our franchise. It is our right and not something that we should allow the ruling cabal to trifle with. All those who think that an election should be held must join together and must converge in Colombo to pressure the government to hold elections.

“We have been campaigning to secure the election. We all must march on Colombo. Anyone who thinks his or her right to vote has been taken away can join us. Ours will be a non-violent struggle.

“The government is not ready to hold an election on its own. So, we have had to fight for it.

“People have been waiting to teach the government a lesson through the ballot. Now, we have to fight for an election. We shalle prevail!”
