HRCSL calls for report from Air Force Commander
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has asked Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudharshna Pathirana, to submit a report on or before 20th July 2021, explianing non-cooperation with the HRCSL, which tried to obtain relevant information to hold a preliminary inquiry as regards the way its quarantine facility is run.
According to the complaint to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, the Commission has drawn attention to the following matters.
1. The President of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, Joseph Stalin and his group were arrested, produced in court and released on bail, after which they were taken to quarantine camps illegally.
2. At the Mullaitivu Air Force Base, the quarantine centre, they did not receive the basic facilities they needed.
3. There was no female officer to provide the woman, who was quarantined, with the basic security and basic necessities she needed.
The HRCSL said in accordance with the powers vested in the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and the responsibilities of the Commission, complaints of human rights violations received by the Commission should be investigated without delay and brought to justice.

Weekly gem fair in Kandy
A group of small-scale gem merchants from the Central Region has taken steps to establish and maintain a new gem market in the Kandy city.
The gem fair is held every Sunday at the upper floor of the George E. de Silva Shopping Complex in Kandy. This initiative provides a dedicated platform for small-scale traders and miners to conduct their business.
A large number of small-scale gem merchants travel from various parts of the country to participate in this weekly market.
Currently operating only on Sundays, the organisers aim to expand the fair into a daily market in the near future. Speaking on behalf of the merchants, Premraj Muthukumara stated that they were seeking support and cooperation of the Kandy Municipal Council and other relevant government institutions to make this a permanent daily fixture in the city.

SC rules no necessity to deliver a formal determination on the “Protection of Occupants” and “Rent Repeal” Bills
Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne yesterday (17) informed Parliament that the Supreme Court has ruled there is no necessity to deliver a formal determination on the “Protection of Occupants” and “Rent Repeal” Bills, which had been challenged under Article 121(1) of the Constitution.
He said the ruling followed an undertaking given to the Attorney General by the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice on February 6 that the proposed legislation would not proceed in its present form.
The Bills are instead to be referred to an expert committee for review and will subsequently be reintroduced as fresh legislation.

Coordinated operation nabs suspect with 2000 foreign fags
The Sri Lanka Navy, in coordination with the Colombo Harbour Police, conducted a joint search operation at the port on 16 Feb 26, leading to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of a stock of 2000 foreign cigarettes.
The search, mounted by SLNS Rangalla belonging to the Western Naval Command with the assistance of the Colombo Harbour Police, led to the arrest of the suspect in possession contraband intended for sale.
The suspect was identified as a resident of Padukka area. He along with the foreign fags was handed over to the Colombo Harbour Police for legal action.
