Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella had sidelined the most experienced officials at the ministry and is working with a few handpicked officials, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) Dr. G. Weerasinghe said on Thursday addressing a press conference.

“This is one reason why the health sector is in chaos. Experienced officials and administrators have been sidelined while a large number of medical specialists are leaving,” he said.

Dr. Weerasinghe, himself a specialist doctor, said that during the past 18 months around 1250 doctors, 2000 nurses and close to a thousand supplementary healthcare professionals had left the country. Thousands of others were planning to leave the country, he said.

“Lack of health staff is a big problem because we are now mainly buying medicine from India. While the Indian pharmaceutical industry is colossal and many countries import drugs from there, we know that certain companies sell substandard drugs.
