Govt. to ask British Museum to return Tara Devi statue

The Statue of Tara at the British Museum. It is a gilt-bronze sculpture (143cm high (4’8") dates from the 7th–8th century AD. It was given to the museum in 1830 by then British Governor Robert Brownrigg.

The government would officially appeal to the British Museum to return the Tara Devi statue taken from Sri Lanka during the colonial rule, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Vidura Wickramanayake said yesterday.

Addressing the media at the Presidential Media Centre, the Minister said that the government had contacted a number of museums in several countries as well as private collectors and asked them to return cultural and religious artefacts and statues taken away from the country during the colonial period,

“We are working to bring back these ancient treasures and we already have received many similar items from the Netherlands,” the Minister said.
