The JVP yesterday lodged a complaint at the CID calling for an investigation into a Facebook account under the name ‘JVP Parisaravediyo’ and requested that information about those who had created the account be ascertained.

The complaint was lodged by former JVP MP Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, Attorneys-at-Law Sunl Watagala and Thushara Ranatunga at the CID Headquarters in Colombo.

As per the complaint, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, on Saturday, at Ulapane, displayed printouts of the aforementioned Facebook account, stating that it was hosted by pro-JVP environmentalists. The party is asking the CID to investigate to find out the persons handling that particular page and details of the owners of the bank accounts from which the funds that had been transferred to boost the posts uploaded in that page. The complaint was lodged under the provisions of the Computer Crimes Act No 47 of 2005, JVP Central committee member Dr Jayatissa told The Island.

“We have concerns about the statement by the President, who is also the Defence Minister. There have been several fake accounts using the JVP name. This parisaravediyo page is the latest. We complained against this page to the Facebook Company on March 18, 2021. We hope that the CID would investigate our complaint and find the identities of the persons handling this page. If the CID does not take action to that effect we have reason to believe that this page has been created with the motive of slinging mud at us by someone who has links to the President to enable him to do so as he did at Ulapane on Saturday.”
