Halloluwa

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has launched a full-scale investigation into an attack on Thusitha Halloluwa, Director General of Public Relations to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, following a shooting incident in Narahenpita on Saturday night.

The probe is conducted by multiple CCD teams under the supervision of its Director Indika Lokuhhetti and Western Province Senior DIG Sanjeewa Dharmarathna.

Halloluwa has told police that he and his counsel Attorney-at-Law Dinesh Dodangoda were travelling along Dabare Mawatha around 8:45 pm when two unidentified men on a motorcycle intercepted their vehicle, fired at the tyres, smashed the windows, and assaulted the pair before fleeing with a confidential file in Halloluwa’s possession.

Both Halloluwa and Dodangoda sustained minor injuries and are being treated at a private hospital.

The attack comes amid an ongoing CID inquiry into Halloluwa, who recently alleged that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had invested Rs. 400 million in a Greek shipping firm. That claim prompted a formal complaint from a group of lawyers, leading to a seven-hour CID interrogation of Halloluwa.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and examining phone records to identify the assailants. A 9mm pistol is believed to have been used in the shooting.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) recently apprehended a person who tried to entice youth, through parliamentarians representing the South, to join a non-existent project, involving Lions International, to secure employment in South Korea.

According to a statement issued by the SLBFE, the 49-year-old suspect has identified himself as a journalist. The SLBFE launched investigations after several MPs received letters (from the arrested person) requesting them to direct youth to an introductory programme that was to be held in Matara.

Those interested in joining the programme have been asked to pay Rs 20,000 each, while promising them vouchers worth Rs 35,000, issued by Lions International, for them to join Korean language classes.

Some of the vehicles at the auction

The Central Provincial Council has taken steps to auction 32 vehicles, including high-priced SUVs and vehicles deemed unfit for road use, imported for the Council in the past.

The Chief Secretary of the Central Provincial Council, Ajith Premawansha, stated that the bidding process opened yesterday, where over 30 vehicles, including high-valued Prado, Land Cruiser, and V8 models, were put up for auction.

It is reported that during this vehicle auction, bids exceeding Rs. 40 million were received for the super Prado and Land Cruiser models. These luxury vehicles were originally imported for the Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers of the Central Provincial Council in the past. Following the dissolution of the Central Provincial Council, these luxury vehicles were released to certain politicians, in Kandy, under previous governments.

Due to the absence of a political authority, within the Central Provincial Council, these vehicles had subsequently been reserved for the official use of the Provincial Governor and top-level state officials of the Central Province.

The other vehicles sold at the auction were those condemned as unfit for road use.

There was a very high demand at this vehicle auction, with a particularly significant interest shown for ultra-luxury vehicles.
