ACJU orders Mosques to preach against illicit drugs causing chaos in society

The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), the scholarly clergy council, yesterday instructed all mosques that conducted Friday Jumu’ah (June 03) sermons to spell out the need to protect children, adults and communities from illicit drugs.
ACJU General Secretary Ash Shaikh M. Arkam Nooramith said: “It is well known that our country is facing several serious problems continuously due to the increasing use of illicit drugs within our society.”
He said they are greatly concerned over the recent news reports of a murder of a little girl which had been reportedly committed by a drug addict. Islam prohibits illicit drug use and has declared that it is the responsibility of every individual to engage in efforts against it. Therefore, All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama requests all Khateebs to deliver Jumu’ah sermons this week, against the menace of illicit drugs and Islam’s clear stand against their use and its consequent impacts upon the society.
Under the Finance Act No. 35 of 2018 a tax has been imposed on the telecommunication towers and accordingly an annual tax amount of Rs. 200,000/- is levied from mobile network operators who possess telecommunication towers. However, it has been proposed in the Budget for 2026 that the said tax shall not be levied for a period of five (5) years in respect of telecommunication towers newly erected on or after 2026-01-01.
Accordingly, the Legal Draftsman has formulated a draft bill to amend the Finance Act No. 35 of 2018 including the provisions for taking necessary action, and the Attorney General has granted the clearance in the regard.
Hence, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution furnished by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to publish the said draft bill in the Government Gazette Notification and thereafter submit the same to the Parliament for its concurrence.
