Williams sisters lose on doubles return

Serena and Venus Williams lost a thriller at the Cincinnati Open in their first doubles match together for four years.

The American pair were beaten 6-2 1-6 10-8 by Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns in front of a packed crowd.

The sisters last played together at the 2022 US Open, which was Serena’s final tournament before she “evolved away” from tennis.

However, the 44-year-old made her return first in doubles in June before playing singles at Wimbledon as a wildcard.

Serena picked up a knee injury in her first-round loss to Maya Joint at SW19, ruling her out of a planned doubles return with Venus.

“We’ve waited a long time to get back on the doubles court. Eventually, we find our way to each other,” Venus, 46, said.

“We give each other so much grace and encouragement.

“This is our first time playing together in forever, and I think we’re really getting into our stride.”

Serena was playing her first match since Wimbledon, while Venus has played singles and doubles at three hard-court events in recent weeks.

The pair made a poor start against Ukraine’s Kostyuk and American Stearns before shaking off what Serena called “a little rust” in the second set.

They quickly went down 6-0 in the deciding 10-point tie-break but fought back impressively.

Serena produced two service winners to force the tie-break back on serve, but Kostyuk and Stearns held firm before securing victory on a double fault from Venus.

“I thought it was fun, it was special, it was good,” Serena said.

“We were starting to feel it. It was really cool to be able to do this again.”

The sisters would need wildcards to play either singles or doubles at the US Open, which begins on Sunday, 30 August.

Serena – who described her knee injury as “a little traumatic experience, but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” – has only played one singles match since her return.

Venus has lost her past 13 singles matches but has had more success in the doubles, reaching the quarter-finals of the women’s tournament in New York last year.

At their peak, they won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together and three Olympic gold medals.

In the singles, world number two Elena Rybakina beat Magdalena Frech 6-4 7-6 (7-2) either side of a lengthy rain delay to reach the fourth round.

Australian Open champion Rybakina could replace Aryna Sabalenka at the top of the world rankings in Cincinnati.

Rybakina must reach the final to have a chance at surpassing Sabalenka. If Sabalenka reaches the quarter-finals, Rybakina would need to win the title to become world number one.

Canadian Open champion Iga Swiatek shook off a poor first set to beat Greece’s Maria Sakarri 4-6 6-1 6-1, while third seed Jessica Pegula beat fellow American Emma Navarro 7-5 6-2.

Yemen government forces claim recapturing Mocha from Houthis

Yemen’s internationally recognised government has said that its forces have retaken the strategic port city of Mocha and key positions near the Bab al-Mandeb strait as they pursue a major counter offennsive against the Houthis.

The Saudi-backed government’s military said on Monday that a “strategic offensive” has also been launched on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, which the Houthis have held since 2014.

The Houthis denied that Mocha had fallen.

Al Jazeera could not independently verify the battlefield claims.

In a post on X, the Yemeni government’s military said it took control of Mocha after “fierce fighting with the Houthis” and that battles there resulted in several Houthi casualties.

The Saudi-led military coalition backing the government also said on Monday that it had begun an air campaign against the Houthis.

The coalition’s spokesman, Major-General Turki al-Maliki, said 100 fighter jets were supporting Yemeni government forces and that the coalition had secured “air protection” over Bab al-Mandeb. Hundreds of Houthi targets were destroyed, he added.

Turkish court detains football refereeing chief pending corruption trial

The refereeing scandal is the latest controversy to shake football in Turkiye [Aljazeera]

The head of Turkiye’s football refereeing body and four other officials have been placed in pretrial detention by a court as part of a corruption investigation, the state news agency Anadolu reports.

Ferhat Gundogdu, head of the Central Referees Committee, and six others appeared before a judge over allegations of manipulation of the referee administration process, Anadolu said on Saturday.

They appeared on Friday before a judge at Istanbul’s Caglayan courthouse on several charges, including forgery of official documents, breach of trust and illegal acquisition of personal data, the report said.

The judge remanded five people in custody and granted the other two conditional release, Anadolu said.

It was the latest scandal to shake football in Turkiye, coming exactly a year after the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees on charges of illegal betting.

On Thursday night, police from the illegal betting and sports crime unit also detained Yasin Kol, a referee from Turkiye’s top-flight Super Lig, as well as an assistant referee, media reports said.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said prosecutors are examining claims about “interference in the processes of referee classification, assignments, scoring and appointments as well as the exams on rules”.

During raids on Tuesday, police searched the VAR room at TFF’s headquarters in Istanbul. Observers said the investigation was likely linked to last year’s betting scandal and would have implications for the federation.

“It does seem to be a continuation of 2025, and it looks like it will continue further,” sports journalist Ayhan Sensoy told the AFP news agency.

Sensoy, who wrote a 2024 book on the issue called The Gambling Pit, said it was unlikely that federation bosses “have any chance of staying in office”.

So far, the TFF has not directly addressed the arrests as its top officials are due to fly home on Saturday after attending Friday night’s Belgium-Turkiye UEFA Nations League clash in Liege, which Turkiye lost 3-0.
