The death toll from weather-related tragic events had risen to nine, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili said persistent heavy rainfall had triggered flooding in several areas, while rock fall affected some roads.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) extended landslide warnings across 10 districts, including Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara, Ratnapura, Badulla, Hambantota, and Nuwara Eliya.

Senior Geologist Dr. Wasantha Senadeera said warnings remained effective for several Divisional Secretariat Divisions in these districts.

The Meteorological Department said that widespread rain had affected many parts of the country for several days due to atmospheric disturbances, with heavy evening showers expected to continue.

Strong winds in Nagoda toppled trees onto power lines along the Mapalagama–Galle main road, causing traffic disruption. Flooding in Deniyaya town prompted security forces to assist residents in reaching safe locations.

The Matara–Kotapala road was completely blocked by floodwaters in Baddanwala, Urubokka.

The Matara District Relief Services Centre reported that 363 people from 100 families have been affected by the extreme weather. The Urubokka Oya overflowed near the Katuwana town on the night of the 22nd, inundating the town and surrounding areas.

Flooding was also reported in many low-lying areas and roads in Bulathsinhala, Kalutara, as heavy rains continue to batter the country.
