UN Technical Electoral Needs Assessment Mission meets with key stakeholders of Parliament

Representatives of the United Nations Technical Electoral Needs Assessment Mission held a series of consultation meetings on 07.10.2025 at Parliament premises, with key parliamentary stakeholders to assess opportunities for international support to strengthen electoral processes in the country.

The UN delegation met with  Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and a group of Members of Parliament representing the Government. They also held separate discussions with the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and Opposition MPs, as well as with members of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus and the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth.

Upon request of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, this United Nations Technical Electoral Needs Assessment Mission visited the country and the mission focused on gathering insights from a wide range of stakeholders including government representatives, political parties, election observers, civil society, and development partners. Discussions centered on enhancing the efficiency, transparency, and inclusivity of Sri Lanka’s electoral system.

Accordingly, key topics addressed included strengthening transparency and integrity in elections, increasing women’s political representation, promoting political literacy and voter education, advancing the digitalization of the electoral process, empowering voters, protecting voting rights, and tackling challenges faced by youth and women in politics.

The United Nations delegation commended the role of the Election Commission and acknowledged the credibility and transparency of Sri Lanka’s electoral framework. They also expressed the UN’s willingness to extend technical assistance to support ongoing and future electoral reforms.

The delegation comprised senior officials from UN Headquarters, including Ms. Michele Griffin, Director of the Electoral Assistance Division; . Dan Malinovich, Electoral Policy Specialist; Ms. Amanda Stark, Political Affairs Officer in the Asia and the Pacific Division; and Ms. Mikyong Kim, Political/Electoral Affairs Officer.

M. Jayalath Perera, Director of Legislative Services and Acting Director of Communication of Parliament of Sri Lanka; Ms. Chandrika Karunaratna, Team Lead for Inclusive Governance, UNDP Sri Lanka and  Chathuranga Hapuarachchi, Media and Parliament Specialist, UNDP Sri Lanka were also present at these meetings.

Lakbima Rice Mills (Pvt) Ltd, based in Polonnaruwa, has contributed Rs. 100 million to the Government’s ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund, established to provide relief to communities affected by Cyclone Ditwa.

The donation cheque was handed over this morning (13) at the Presidential Secretariat to Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the President, by Dudley Sirisena, Chairman of the Araliya Group of Companies.

at 12.30 p.m. 13 December 2025 valid for the period until 11.00 p.m. 13 December 2025 for Kaluthara, Rathnapura, Galle and Matara Districts

The public are warned that thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur at some places in the Kaluthara, Rathnapura, Galle and Matara Districts.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

ACTION REQUIRED:
The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:
 Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

 Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

 Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.

 Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.

 Beware of fallen trees and power lines.

 For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.

Pregnant Mothers to receive Rs 5000 Nutrition Allowance in December

Based on the prevailing disaster situation and the upcoming festive season, arrangements have been made to provide a nutrition allowance worth Rs. 5,000 to pregnant mothers.

This allowance, which will be provided only once, will be given to pregnant mothers who were registered at maternal clinics on or before 30 November 2025.

The distribution will take place through the Divisional Secretariat offices from 16 December, as a program of the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs.
