Two Indian trawlers, 23 fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters detained

The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away Indian trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters on Saturday night (03rd February 2024). Two (02) Indian trawlers and twenty three (23) Indian nationals who were poaching in northern waters of Sri Lanka, off the Delft Island in Jaffna were detained during the operation.

The Navy conducts regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices by foreign trawlers, taking into account the impact these practices have on the livelihood of local fishermen.

The twenty three (23)  Indian fishermen and the two (02) trawlers were brought to the Kankasanthurai Harbour and they were to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal action.
