Trinity hold late burst by Vidyartha to win 20-10 at Bogambara

Trinity College Kandy did remarkably well to hold back a late second-half rally by Vidyartha College and record a hard-fought 20-10 win in their Division 1 Segment A Group 2 fixture of the inter-school under 19 league rugby tournament played at Bogambara on Sunday (June 25).
Trinity dominated proceedings in the first half and rattled their opponents with a try and a penalty try. But Vidyartha baffled them in the final ten minutes of the game earning two tries with a third touchdown by the ‘Tigers’ being turned down by the referee due to an infringement. Vidyartha also lost gaining advantage off the conversions because the kicker not being accurate twice in clearing the target.
Trinity earned their points in the game through three tries, one conversion and a penalty while Vidyartha responded with two tries in the second half after struggling to settle down in the first half.
On Saturday (June 24) the biggest win was recorded by Royal when they smashed Science College 45-10 in their Division 1 Segment A Group 2 encounter played at Mount Lavinia. The winners ran in seven tries out of which five were converted.
Isipathana prevailed over hosts S. Thomas’ at Mount Lavinia with a thumping 29 points to 20 win in their group 1 fixture after leading 17-3 at the breather. The winners collected their second bonus point in this tournament after running in four tries as against two by S. Thomas’.
Up at Pallakele, D.S. Senanayake College had a surprise waiting for hosts St. Anthony’s College when they recorded a close 23 points to 19 win. It was D.S Senanayake’s first game for the season.
Also on Saturday Zahira College justified their promotion to Division 1 Segment A rugby when they beat Dharmaraja by 18 points to 15 while Joes scrapped through to a 3-0 win against Wesley in Colombo.
