India has evinced a keen interest to mediate to solve the issues faced by the Tamils of the North and East and to ensure that their rights are upheld, TNA Leader, R. Sampanthan has said.

Sampanthan made the statement following a two-hour meeting with the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka. High Gopal Bagle, Political Secretary, Banu Prakash, TNA leader and MP M.A. Sumanthiran took part in the discussion.

Sampanthan has said that the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, established after the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, had not solved the issues faced by the Tamil people. Therefore, Tamil political parties, including the TNA, had written to the Indian Prime Minister and asked him to intervene and strengthen the 13th Amendment and to hold Provincial Council polls based on the new amendment. The TNA leader has also said that the Indian Prime Minister had paid attention to their request.

The Indian Prime Minister will visit Sri Lanka in March and meet the TNA leaders.
