A police sergeant and two constables had been interdicted yesterday pending investigations into their alleged involvement in killing a wild elephant in Bakamuna, last week, police said.

The three policemen were attached to the Bakamuna Police Station at the time of the incident.

They opened fire on the elephant, killing it, while they were on patrol last week (Aug 15).

The policemen were taken into custody by the area Wildlife officials in connection with the elephant’s death.

They were produced in court after which they were released on bail.

Several villagers in the area, including the village monk, said the elephant, which was blind in one eye, had never harmed anyone and when he comes to their homesteads on a regular basis in search of fodder they never fear him as he would leave when they told it to do so.
