Third straight loss ends World Cup hopes for West Indies
West Indies plunged to a new low as they failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup for the first time in their history. The champions of the first two editions, forced to play the qualifiers to make it to the event in India later this year, already suffered losses to hosts Zimbabwe and Netherlands; and in a must-win Super Six clash against Scotland on Saturday (July 1), they were bowled out for just 181 and eventually lost by 7 wickets.
Even though Brandon King started off proceedings with two boundaries in the opening over, Brandon McMullen dismissed Johnson Charles and Shamarh Brooks for ducks to rattle West Indies early. While King hammered two more boundaries in an attempt to counterattack, McMullen struck again with the new ball, halting the opener’s charge to reduce West Indies to 25/3.
The procession continued as the key batters including Nicholas Pooran, skipper Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers departed without making an impact as Scotland put West Indies in deep trouble. At 81/6, things looked extremely bleak for West Indies before allrounders Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd added 77 crucial runs for the seventh wicket to stabilise the innings. But just before the pair could open up at the death, Scotland struck again and put an end to their opponent’s misery by bowling them out for 181.
Holder gave his side a glimmer of hope when he struck first ball in the chase. However, McMullen came to Scotland’s rescue again in the powerplay as he put on over 125 for the second wicket to shut West Indies’ hopes for good. McMullen and Matthew Cross took their time and made only 40 runs in the powerplay. With only 182 runs to hunt down, Scotland had ample time to get the job done. To make matters worse, McMullen was dropped by Mayers on 21 and he made that count.
He brought up his fifty off 85 balls with a boundary as Scotland knocked off 94 runs by the halfway stage. Cross then took on Kevin Sinclair to smash a hat-trick of boundaries before bringing up a 68-ball fifty. While Shepherd finally put an end to the 125-run stand, Cross remained in the crease right until the end to see his side through with six and a half overs to spare.
Brief scores:
West Indies 181 in 43.5 overs (Jason Holder 45, Romario Shepherd 36; Brandon McMullen 3/32, Mark Watt 2/25) lost to Scotland 185/3 in 43.3 overs (Matthew Cross 74*, Brandon McMullen 69; Akeal Hosein 1/26) by 7 wickets
