The Socratic Standard
By Lynn Ockersz
Socrates of yore remains the model,
For men aiming at ruling excellence,
And a life dedicated to public service,
Because he drank of the poisoned cup,
And died a champion of the truth,
Rather than betray his convictions,
For a cocktail of fleeting pleasures,
And was crowned with immortality,
In the long evolution of the human,
But for politicians of our drifting Isle,
Now facing a compounded crisis,
The lesson to take way is obvious:
‘Measure up to the Socratic standard;
Be clear in mind and Conscience,
Or join history’s anonymous hordes,
Of “strutting and fretting” losers,
Best blotted off history’s pages.’
