The Mall at Port City Colombo celebrates women entrepreneurs

The Mall at Port City Colombo, in partnership with CAN Market, successfully hosted a vibrant three-day celebration in honor of International Women’s Day 2025. Held from March 7th to 9th at The Mall at Port City Colombo, the event highlighted the creativity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit of Sri Lankan women.

CAN Market, a post-pandemic initiative supporting over 300 small businesses, has empowered women entrepreneurs across Sri Lanka by providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and sustain their livelihoods. This Women’s Day edition featured a dynamic blend of pop-up markets, interactive workshops, and celebrity engagement to drive visibility and recognition for women-led businesses.

The event hosted 25 pop-up stalls featuring fashion, food, homeware, and handmade crafts, allowing visitors to directly support women-owned enterprises. Attendees had the unique opportunity to meet the faces behind these brands, hear their stories, and purchase exclusive, locally crafted products.

Adding to the excitement, renowned Sri Lankan personalities, including former Colombo Mayoress and Former Mrs. World, Rosy Senanayake, Mrs. World 2020, Caroline Jurie, and Mrs. World 2024 first runner-up, Ishadi Amanda, engaged with artisans in hands-on craftsmanship activities. A special ‘Coffee, Cake & Craft session, conducted at ‘MONO Tea & Beverage on March 8th from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, allowed guests to interact with Key Opinion Leaders such as Sangeetha Weeraratne, Thisakya Senanayake, and Ramani Fernando while celebrating the artistry of female entrepreneurs. Jewelry-making workshops also took place throughout the event, where visitors created custom-made jewelry pieces, including bracelets, charms, and anklets, at affordable prices. The event was further supported by One World Duty Free, Mono Tea, Department of Coffee, and Royal Cashews.

The Mall at Port City Colombo’s International Women’s Day celebration successfully brought together Sri Lankans from all walks of life to recognize and support women entrepreneurs. Through shopping at the market, engaging in workshops, and participating in interactive sessions, attendees played an essential role in fostering a thriving ecosystem for women in business.

Nestlé Lanka Announces Change in Leadership

Nestlé Lanka Limited has announced the appointment of Manav Sahni as its Chairman and Managing Director effective 01 May 2026. He will be succeeding Bernie Stefan, who will be transitioning to a new global role within the Nestlé Group. Bernie Stefan led Nestlé’s Sri Lankan operations through a particularly challenging time since 2023 – and has successfully guided the company through a strategic turnaround, positioning it on a axis for sustainable growth.

Speaking on his tenure at Nestlé Lanka, Bernie commented “Leading Nestlé Lanka has been a deeply meaningful chapter in my Nestlé journey. I am grateful to have worked alongside an amazing and resilient team that continues to make a difference for Sri Lankans across the country. On a personal note, it was an amazing opportunity to live on this beautiful island and experience firsthand the openness, warmth and kindness of its people, which has been the highlight of my Nestlé career to date. Manav Sahni brings with him over 18 years of experience in the FMCG & Telecom sector. Prior to taking on the role as Chairman and Managing Director of Nestlé Lanka Limited, he has been heading Nestlé’s Dairy business for the South Asia Region, where he expertly managed a highly diverse portfolio, driving sustainable business transformation.

Ceylon Theatres will unveil the newly revamped Majestic Cineplex on the 29th of April 2026, beginning a new chapter for one of Sri Lanka’s best known cinema destinations. Located at Majestic City Colombo, Majestic Cineplex returns with major technology upgrades, enhanced comfort, and a range of premium viewing options, reinforcing Ceylon Theatres’ long standing reputation for raising the bar in cinema entertainment experiences in Sri Lanka. SLIC Life Reports Strong 2025 Performance, Sustaining Growth Momentum

Sri Lanka Insurance Life (SLIC Life) reported a strong financial performance in 2025, driven by robust premium growth, higher profitability, and continued policyholder confidence.

The company posted a Profit Before Tax of Rs. 4.3 billion, while Gross Written Premium rose 24% to Rs. 32.6 billion. New Business Premium Income recorded a sharp 42% increase to Rs. 7.56 billion, marking the highest growth among leading life insurers and reflecting expanded market reach.

SLIC Life paid Rs. 16.2 billion in claims and maturity benefits during the year and declared Rs. 12.5 billion in bonuses for 2025 on policies in force during 2024—the highest annual bonus in the local life insurance industry. Since 2006, total bonuses paid have reached Rs. 116.6 billion.

The company’s asset base grew to Rs. 275 billion, while its Life Fund expanded to Rs. 247 billion, retaining its position as the largest in the industry. It also contributed Rs. 1.4 billion in taxes to the Government.

Operational performance was further supported by a record 351 Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) qualifiers in 2025, the highest in its history.

CEO Nalin Subasinghe attributed the results to disciplined execution and strong customer trust, while Chairman Nusith Kumaratunga highlighted the company’s resilience and contribution to national economic stability.

SLIC Life also began 2026 on a positive note, reporting January GWP of Rs. 3.2 billion, up 22%, and New Business Premium of Rs. 717.6 million, up 20% year-on-year.

The insurer continued to receive industry recognition, including being named ‘Most Loved Life Insurance Brand’ for the eighth consecutive year and maintaining strong international ratings and certifications.

Beyond business performance, the company expanded social initiatives including scholarships, school support programmes, and disaster relief efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, reinforcing its broader community engagement.
