Sri Lanka’s first-ever telethon A FUNDRAISER FOR THOSE BATTLING COVID-19
Telethons are popular fundraisers, in most parts of the world, but we are yet to experience such an event! Okay, all you need to do now is to wait, patiently…until August 29th!
A telethon (a combination of ‘television’ and ‘marathon – hence ‘telethon’) is a televised fundraiser and, in some countries, these events lasts many hours…sometimes even days!
The purpose of these telethon events is to raise money for a charitable, or a worthy cause – mainly through pledges (promises to donate funds at a later time).
With our frontliners – the tri-forces, the police, doctors, nurses, the health authorities – doing a herculean task to keep the citizens of Sri Lanka safe from the deadly coronavirus pandemic, a telethon is taking shape, for the sole purpose of raising funds for those battling Covid-19.
Sri Lanka’s first-ever telethon will take the form of a musical event – a concert featuring the cream of local talent.
ARISE SRI LANKA is his brainchild, and is scheduled to be held on Saturday, August 29th, in Colombo, with the concert being televised (live streaming) to as many countries, as possible.
“I want the world to know how successful we have been in keeping Covid-19 under control, and I’m also looking forward to seeing those people, who appreciate the work of our frontliners, showing their gratitude, by way of pledges.”
Richard indicated that anyone can donate whatever they can afford – even Rs. 10/= would be greatly appreciated, he added.
The pledges, and donations, can be made during the live streaming of ARISE SRI LANKA, from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm, on Saturday, August 29th, said Richard.
In addition to performing, Noeline Honter and Sohan Weerasinghe will also host the show.
