Sri Lanka to host Afghanistan next month
Sri Lanka will host Afghanistan in three ODIs next month lead up to the ICC World Cup qualifiers. All three games will be day matches and will be played at Suriyawewa on the 2nd, 4th and 7th of June.
The series was scheduled after Sri Lanka failed to automatically qualify for this year’s World Cup, the sport’s showpiece event. The Afghan series is expected to give Sri Lanka’s players some exposure lead up to the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe later next month.
Afghanistan played an ODI series in Sri Lanka last year and while the tourists won game one, the hosts bounced back to square the three-match series by winning the last game. The second ODI was washed out by rain.
Suriyawewa hasn’t hosted an international game in more than three years, with the ground’s last game being an ODI against West Indies in February 2020. However, the venue has hosted the Lanka Premier League games.
