Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council holds 33rd AGM
The 33rd Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council (SLPBC) was held recently, attended by Major General (R) Faheem Ul Aziz, HI (M) High Commissioner of Pakistan in Sri Lanka at Cinnamon Lakeside, Colombo.
Wasantha de Silva, Managing Director DMW Ventures (Pvt) Ltd was elected as President of SLPBC for 2025/26, while Feroze Haji Anver from Cliftex Industries (Pvt) Ltd and Perakum Mahasen Abeysekera from Vinu International Trading Company (Pvt)Ltd were elected Vice Presidents, and M. Shabeer Iqbal from Star Textile Processing Industries was elected Treasurer. Indhra Kaushal Rajapaksa Chairman/Managing Director of the Kalhari Group of Companies will serve the committee as Immediate Past President.
The newly appointed committee for the year 2025/26 consists of Gayan Maddumarachchi from APS Logistics International (Pvt) Ltd, Malithi Rajapaksha from John Keells Holdings PLC,Abdul Rehman Abdul Aziz from Rays International Shipping (Pvt) Ltd, Chandana Jirasinha from Aitken Spence Cargo (Pvt) Ltd and Priyantha Dissanayake from Mansel Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd.
Faheem Ul Aziz, emphasised the need to increase Sri Lanka’s tea exports to Pakistan and also called on Sri Lankan businesses to pursue investment opportunities in Pakistan, particularly in high-potential sectors.
Addressing the gathering, newly elected President of the Council de Silva affirming that the deep-rooted friendship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan built on shared values, strong people-to-people connections, and expanding economic ties continues to flourish under the Free Trade Agreement, with immense potential in trade, tourism, and business collaboration.
The SLPBC aims to promote trade, services, and tourism between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The Council’s efforts are geared towards building stronger industry engagements, exploring new business opportunities, and facilitating greater collaboration among these two nations to unlock their combined potential. Efforts such as facilitating on-arrival visa services for Pakistani visitors are a key component of this strategy.

Port City Colombo strengthens Gulf investment ties at Dubai diplomatic engagement
Port City Colombo (PCC) took a prominent role as Platinum Sponsor at the second edition of Sri Lanka Beyond Your Dreams, a high-level diplomatic and investment engagement hosted by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. The event, held on 2nd September 2026 at the Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City, brought together over 400 senior UAE-based business leaders, investors, diplomats, and institutional stakeholders, alongside Sri Lanka’s most senior government representatives.
The gathering was graced by Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, as Guest of Honour, and Vijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism. A high-level Sri Lankan delegation – including the Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Chairman of the Board of Investment, the Chairman of the Export Development Board, and the Director General of Commerce – underscored the government’s strong commitment to deepening economic diplomacy with the UAE.
In his keynote address, Minister Herath reaffirmed the centuries-old ties between Sri Lanka and the Arab region, emphasising the UAE’s vital role as a key economic partner. He stressed the urgency of finalising a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the UAE, which would establish a robust framework to elevate trade, investment, and bilateral cooperation. Declaring Sri Lanka “open and ready for business,” he positioned Port City Colombo as the physical embodiment of this economic mission – a modern Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with a dedicated legal framework and competitive incentives, offering UAE investors a natural gateway to South Asia while maintaining strong Gulf connectivity.
