by Saman Indrajith
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday requested MPs to refrain from bringing visitors to Parliament in view of the recent outbreak of COVID-19.
Making a special announcement at the time of the commencement of sittings, the Speaker said that the MPs should adhere to the guidelines and recommendations laid down by the health authorities to prevent the spread of the pandemic.
“The MPs must observe those guidelines and should not extend invitations to outsiders and meet them within the parliament premises. They should invite only a minimum number of state officials as a health precautionary measure. In addition, parliament staff members, journalists covering parliament, service providers and suppliers of goods to parliament and security staff too are required to adhere to the health guidelines, the Speaker stressed.
