Speaker responds to President’s letter

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana yesterday (08) announced that the proposed appointment of 17 Sectoral Oversight Committees had been included in the Order Paper of the Parliament. Referring to the proposed appointment of three committees to be established, the Speaker had requested all MPs to extend necessary support.

Accordingly, approval for incidental matters, related to these Sectoral Oversight Committees, and the establishment of the three Committees of, Committee on Banking and Financial Services, Committee on Economic Stabilization and the Committee on Ways and Means, was to be obtained at the meetings of the Committee on Parliamentary Business and the Committee of Selection yesterday. The Speaker made the annoucement in the wake of President Ranil Wickremesinghe finding fault with Parliament for failing to set up the committees and sectoral oversight committees. (SI)

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Buddhism, Religious, and Cultural Affairs to provide tax relief on imported dates received as donations or gift for Ramadan.

This year’s Ramadan fasting season is scheduled to begin on 19-02-2026 and end on 21-03-2026.
