Speaker calls for report on Sumanthiran’s security
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has requested from IGP Wickremaratne an assessment on threats faced by TNA lawmaker M.A. Sumanthiran, PC.
Political sources yesterday (21) told The Island that Speaker Abeywardena had sought a report from the IGP in the wake of the SJB lawmakers, Lakshman Kiriella and Rauf Hakeem demanding immediate restoration of the STF contingent previously assigned to the TNA member.
Sources said that the issue was taken up at the Business Committee chaired by the Speaker last Thursday. Early this month, Public Security Minister retired Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera removed the STF contingent assigned to Sumanthiran after he participated in a protest march in the North demanding restoration of normalcy and justice to war victims. Sumanthiran claimed that his life was in danger due to denial of proper security. He was provided the enhanced security following an abortive bid on his life by a rump LTTE grouping. (SF)
