Some Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs had pledged support to President Ranil Wickremesinghe because they thought the party would not field a candidate, State Minister Premalal Jayasekera said yesterday (13) after pledging support to party candidate Namal Rajapaksa.

Jayasekera had earlier pledged support to Wickremesinghe at a meeting in Ratnapura.

Speaking at a media briefing at the SLPP HQ, Jayasekera said he had attended an SLPP group meeting in Ratnapura, convened by MP Janaka Wakkumbura, and was given the impression that the SLPP would not field a presidential candidate.

“Now that the SLPP has fielded a candidate, I will support him. Our voters ask us to stay with the SLPP. We will win Ratnapura and many people who joined Wickremesinghe will return to the SLPP’s fold,” Jayasekera said. (RK)
