SLPP candidate Damith Wickramasinghe accuses Govt of misleading public
By Chatura Pamunuwa
Damith Wickramasinghe, the former Chairman of the National Youth Services Council and current Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate for the Colombo District, accused the government of misleading the public with lies during a rally in Avissawella on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering of supporters, Wickramasinghe criticized the government’s handling of the country’s economy, particularly its claims regarding the printing of money. He stated, “Now, look at this – they say they are not printing money, but they are releasing money into the market to maintain the country’s liquidity. They ask us why the current President’s signature is not on it, but that’s not how it works. When the Central Bank releases money, they don’t keep a printer close by and print it whenever they feel like it. They release old notes that have already been printed and stored.”
Wickramasinghe also questioned the government’s financial dealings, adding, “Can anyone tell me that they haven’t taken new loans from institutions like the World Bank? This government is trying to come into power with lies and stay in power by continuing the lies.”
He further claimed that the recent local elections in Elpitiyaya had sent a clear signal that the people were dissatisfied with the current administration. “The people sent them a message through their vote that they can’t do it,” he said.
