SL envoy meets DRC FM and CDS

Kinshasa, Congo: Envoy  Kana Kananathan, concurrently accredited to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), engaged in high-level discussions yesterday with DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, Chief of Defence Staff General Christian Tshiwewe Songesha and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Ychaligonza Nduru Jacques.

Foreign Minister Wagner expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, underscoring the constructive discussions aimed at strengthening relations and enhancing comprehensive cooperation across all levels.

The high-level talks focused on broadening bilateral relations between the two countries, covering a range of topics such as economic diplomacy, trade relations, investment flows, and renewable energy cooperation. Ambassador Kananathan highlighted the interest of Sri Lankan entrepreneurs, who have excelled in the renewable energy sectors in East Africa, in exploring opportunities in the DRC. He pointed out the vast potential for mini hydro energy projects given the DRC’s numerous rivers. He also mentioned that LOLC, a leading Sri Lankan blue-chip company, is already active in the DRC’s banking and microfinance sectors. Foreign Minister Wagner thanked Ambassador Kananathan for his proactive initiatives and assured full governmental support for investors.

General Songesha echoed the sentiments of collaboration, emphasising that the DRC could greatly benefit from Sri Lanka’s expertise and comprehensive approach to defense. He stressed the significance of strategic collaboration to tackle regional security challenges effectively.

Ambassador Kananathan highlighted Sri Lanka’s experience in counter-terrorism, discussing the country’s successful strategies in combating terrorism and maintaining national security. The discussions also delved into the potential for joint training programmes and knowledge exchange to strengthen the DRC’s defense capabilities.The meetings underscored the mutual benefits of increased cooperation in security, defense training, and intelligence sharing. This initiative marks a crucial step in strengthening the bond between Sri Lanka and the DRC, setting the stage for a robust partnership aimed at enhancing stability and security in both nations.Both sides had constructive discussions to strengthen relations at all levels and enhance comprehensive cooperation. As Sri Lanka and the DRC continue to build on this foundation, both nations look forward to a future of strengthened ties and collaborative efforts that will benefit their nations

Four dead 32 injured in head on collision at Weerawila

Four persons including a Budhist monk died and 32 others were injured when two SLTB buses collided  head  on at Weerawila at arond 12 noon today (18).

Three of the deceased were women. 22 of the injured were admitted to the Hambanthota  Hospital while 10 others have been admitted to the Debarawewa hospital.

JMSDF ship OONAMI concludes goodwill visit

The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) ship OONAMI which  arrived at the port of Colombo on a goodwill and replenishment visit on 09 Mar 26 departed  on 11 March.

The departing ship was given  a  formal farewell from the Sri Lanka Navy, in keeping with naval traditions at the Port of Colombo.

The 150.5m long JMSDF OONAMI is commanded by Commander IIO Hiromasa.

During the stay in the island, crew members of the ship explored some tourist attractions in Colombo. The itinerary also included a coastal clean-up drive participated by naval personnel of both countries and engagements with the Sri Lanka Navy, designed to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation.

Cabinet nod to amend Central Cultural Fund Act No. 57 of 1980

The Central Cultural Fund established under the provisions of the Central Cultural Fund Act No. 57 of 1980 is responsible for development of cultural and religious monuments in Sri Lanka, settling the expenditure borne for development, renovation and conservation of local and foreign cultural monuments, awarding financial donations for artisans as well as awarding those who served the nation in the fields of culture and religious sectors.

The said act has been passed in  Parliament 45 years back and, the requirement to revise the provisions of the act according to the contemporary requirements haa been recognized.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers granted their policy
approval to amend the said act, considering the resolution furnished by the Minister of Buddhasashana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
