SJB decries bid to deny Harsha top COPF post
SJB heavyweight Dr. Harsha de Silva, MP, yesterday (22) said that there couldn’t be any issue regarding his re-appointment as the head of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF).
The Colombo District MP said so when The Island asked him about the delay in Parliament making the announcement regarding his appoinment. MP de Silva said that there couldn’t be any issue as the Chief Opposition Whip, Lakshman Kiriella, proposed him as the Chairman of the COPF. Responding to another query, MP de Silva said that Chairmen of COPE (Committee on Public Enterprises) and COPA (Committee on
Public Accounts) were elected by vote in case there were two contestants. However, COPF head was not elected but proposed by the Opposition, he said.
The lawmaker said that even Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena approved his name though some influential party continued to interfere in the formalisation of the appointment.
SJB MPs Lakshman Kiriella, S.M. Marikkar and Chaminda Wijesiri took up this issue in parliament yesterday. (SF)
