Sri Lankan Tamil political parties that pressured India, demanding provincial council elections, should apply the same pressure on the Sri Lankan government, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Foreign Secretary of India, told representatives of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on 04 October.

Shringla made this statement during a meeting with TNA representatives at the India House in Colombo.

The Indian Foreign Secretary has also said that India could not apply pressure on Sri Lanka just because New Delhi had fully supported the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution or because of the Indo-Sri Lankan agreement.

Shringla said that instead of each Tamil party making separate requests from India, all should unite and take up the issue with the Sri Lankan government. Several TNA MPs including TNA Leader R. Sampanthan attended the meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary.
