Showery conditions are expected to be enhanced in the southwest part of the country to some extent today (25) and tomorrow (26).

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely at some places in the Western province and in Galle and Matara districts.  Several spells of showers will occur in North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night.

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be (25-40) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times in Western slopes of the central hills, North-central province and in Puttalam, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

Wind speed may increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and up to (40-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar will be rough at times while the sea areas off the coast extending Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will be fairly rough.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershower.

The prevailing showery conditions are expected to continue over the Northern and Eastern parts of the island.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Western and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers will occur at times in the North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Eastern, Uva and Central provinces and in Polonnaruwa district. Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern and North-western provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other areas of the island after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the Eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Level III landslide early warnings issued to the districts of Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya

The landslide early warning centre of the National Building Research Organization [NBRO] has issued Level III landslide early warnings to the districts of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya at 0230 AM on 18th December valid for the next 24 hours.

Accordingly,
LEVEL III RED landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of  Doluwa,  Ududumbara and  Medadumbara in the Kandy district, and  Mathurata,  Nildandahinna,  Hanguranketha and  Walapane in the Nuwara Eliya district.

LEVEL II AMBER  landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Pathahewaheta, Yatinuwara, Panvila, Gangawata Korale, Udunuwara, Pasbage Korale, Harispattuwa, Thumpane, Pathadumbara, Akurana, Hatharaliyadda, Deltota, Poojapitiya, Minipe, Udapalatha, Ganga Ihala Korale and Kundasale in the Kandy district, Rideegama in the Kurunegala district, and Nuwara Eliya in the Nuwara Eliya district.

LEVEL I YELLOW landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Uva Paranagama, Badulla, Hali_Ela, Meegahakivula, Haldummulla, Kandeketiya, Passara, Soranathota, Ella, Welimada, Lunugala, Haputhale and Bandarawela in the Badulla district, Polgahawela, Alawwa, Mallawapitiya and Mawathagama in the  Kurunegala district, Matale, Rattota, Naula, Pallepola, Ukuwela, Yatawatta, Ambanganga Korale, Laggala Pallegama and Wilgamuwa in the Matale district, and Ambagamuwa Korale, Thalawakele, Norwood, Kothmale East and Kothmale West in the Nuwara Eliya district.

Under the influence of the Easterly winds, the prevailing showery conditions over the Northern and Eastern parts of the island are expected to continue further during the next few days.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Eastern and Central provinces and in the Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts.
