Showers predicted in several provinces
Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 27 February 2024 by the Department of Meteorology
Several spells of showers will occur in Eastern, North-central and Uva provinces and in Nuwara-Eliya and Matale districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Galle and Matara districts in the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times in eastern slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, North-western, Southern,Uva and Eastern provinces. Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Pottuvil and up to (50-55) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara can be rough at times while the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Pottuvil can be fairly rough at times.
The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers

Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology at 3.30 p.m. 22 April 2025, valid for 23 April 2025.
The General public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in Northern, North-central, North-western and Eastern provinces and Monaragala, Hambantota districts.
The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.
Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the table below and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.
ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated. Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Ampara district during the morning.
Showers or thundershowers may occur in Western province and in Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts in the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rain fall about 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central Uva, Eastern, Northern and North-central provinces.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
