Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 15 January 2025 by the Department of Meeorology

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island and cloudy skies are expected. Fairly heavy showers about 100mm are likely at some places in Eastern, Uva, Central and Southern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district.

Fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Northern, Eastern, North-central, North-western and Uva provinces and in Matara and Hambantota districts.

Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas and speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar. Wind speed can increase up to (45- 50) kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar will be rough at times while other sea areas around the island may be fairly rough at times but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western, Southern and Uva provinces and in Anuradhapura, Mannar, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 2.00 p.m. Dry weather will prevail over the other parts of the island.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
