Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 11 December 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty condition can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces in the morning.

Showers will occur at times in Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other provinces of the island after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers above 75mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Winds will be North-easterly in direction and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate but temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Warm Weather Advisory Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology at 3.30 p.m. on 17 March 2026, valid for 18 March 2026.

The general public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Monaragala, Mannar, Vavuniya and Anuradhapura districts.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.

Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.

Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.

Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.

Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the  Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura and Kaluthara districts during the early hours of the morning.

A few showers may occur over the eastern coastal areas during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in  most parts of the island after 2.00 pm. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces and in Anuradhapura district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
