Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

Showers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces and Hambantota district while several spells of showers will occur in Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts.  Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in other areas of the island after 2.00 p.m.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times in eastern slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district. Wind speed may increase up to (40-50) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Pottuvil and up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar..

The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar will be rough at times while the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Pottuvil will be fairly rough at times but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Atmospheric conditions will be favorable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of the island from tomorrow (20th April).

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North-western, North-central and Southern provinces after 1.00 pm. Fairly heavy showers about 50 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Dry weather will prevail over the other parts of the island.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern
and Southern provinces and in Monaragala district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
