Share market sets ‘optimistic tone’ for 2025; economic growth seen to be in the offing

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) has shown robust growth in 2024. With a 49.6 percent increase in the All Share Price Index and other positive developments, an optimistic tone has been set for 2025, Senior Vice President – Marketing for CSE Niroshan Wijesundere said.

“A stable political environment, low interest rates, continuation of macroeconomic reforms under the IMF program, the country’s rating upgrade and debt restructuring are positive developments that will enable economic growth and instill investor confidence, Wijesundera told The Island Financial Review.

“With a focus on inclusivity, ESG integration and digital transformation strategies, the CSE has plans to expand retail participation, attract foreign inflows, encourage IPO activity, diversify product range and develop market infrastructure, he said.

“These efforts will strengthen Sri Lanka’s capital market as a driver of sustainable economic growth and broader wealth creation, Wijesudenra added.

Amid those developments, huge selling pressure was recorded especially in the banking sector yesterday. The All- Share Price Index went down by 130.08 points, while the S and P SL20 went down by

by 53.7 points. Turnover stood at Rs 8.5 billion with one crossing. The crossing was reported in Hemas Holdings, which crossed 1.8 million shares to the tune of Rs 199.8 million; its shares traded at Rs 111.

In the retail market, companies that mainly contributed to the turnover were; JKH Rs 802 million (33.4 million shares traded), Browns Investments Rs 697 million (89.5 million shares traded), HNB Rs 432 million (1.3 million shares traded), Sampath Bank Rs 329 million (2.8 million shares traded), Pan Asia Bank Rs 305 million (8.3 million shares traded), LOLC Holdings Rs 291 million (229,000 shares traded). During the day 358 million share volumes changed hands in 55000 transactions.

It is said that almost all the sectors performed well, especially Browns Investments. JKH and Browns Investments were the main contributors to the turnover.

Yesterday, the rupee opened weaker at Rs 294.30/60 to the US dollar in the spot market, from Rs 293.95/294.15 on Friday, while bond yields were up, dealers said.

A bond maturing on 15.12.2026 was quoted stable at 9.45/55 percent. A bond maturing on 15.09.2027 was quoted at 9.80/90 percent, up from 9.75/85 percent. A bond maturing on 15.02.2028 was quoted at 10.15/20 percent, up from 10.10/15 percent. A bond maturing on 15.09.2029 was quoted at 10.80/85 percent, up from 10.70/80 percent. A bond maturing on 15.05.2030 was quoted at 11.00/10 percent, up from 10.95/11.05 percent.

The George Keyt Foundation (GKF), dedicated to preserving the legacy of modernist painter George Keyt and fostering local art, has announced strategic appointments to its leadership team, bringing together a mix of global academic expertise, corporate leadership, and artistic passion. These enhancements aim to inject fresh expertise and academic depth into the Foundation’s long-term vision.

Establishment of the New Advisory Committee

To broaden its operational reach and deepen its engagement with the global art market, the George Keyt Foundation has established an Advisory Committee. The newly appointed committee members include:

• Dr Sujatha Meegama is a Senior Lecturer in Buddhist Art History at the Courtauld. She is an acclaimed art historian, author and academic, bringing specialised knowledge in South Asian art history to guide the foundation’s curatorial and educational directives.
