SC bench headed by CJ reserves final order in respect of FR petitions over Easter carnage

Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and six other judges of the Supreme Court, yesterday reserved the final order in respect of the Fundamental Rights Violation petitions, filed over the Easter Sunday mob blasts in 2019.Leave to proceed was granted in respect of the petitions three years ago, and a detailed hearing followed.Among the petitioners are the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and twelve others.

Among the respondents are the then Minister of Defence Maithripala Sirisena, then IGP Pujith Jayasundera and the then Secretary Defence Hemasiri Fernando.Additional Solicitor General Priyantha Nawana, President’s Counsel, appeared for the Attorney General.

The Supreme Court Bench comprised Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare, Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya, Justice Murdhu Fernando, Justice S. Thurairajah, Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz and Justice A.L. Shiran Gooneratne.
