Sandaru, Lisal, Ruvi, Dinara advance to Under-14 singles finals
105th Colombo Championships
Finalists were found in the Under-14 boys’ and girls’ singles of the 105th Colombo Championships at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association clay courts on Tuesday.
Sandaru Guruge, Lisal Goonetilleke, Ruvi Lewkebandara and Dinara de Silva won their respective semi-final matches to book places in the boys’ and girls’ singles finals.
Boys number one seed Guruge beat Ganuka Fernando 6-1, 6-4, while Goonetilleke scored a hard fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Methvan Wijemanne.
In the girls’ semi-finals, number one seed Ruvi Lewkebandara beat Melasha Randini 6-2, 6-4 and Dinara de Silva ousted Arushi Thomas 6-2, 6-2.
In the Under-12 boys’ singles, Lithium Jayabandu (beat Abdul Cader 6-2, 6-3), Gehash Tissera (beat Aahil Kaleel 6-7, 6/1, 10-5) and Methika Wickramasinghe (beat Jayin de Seram 7-5, 6-4) won their matches to advance to the semi-finals of the lowest age category event.
Kiran Vairavanathan advanced to the semi-final of the Under-16 boys’ singles when Wenuka Kithnula retired before completing the first set.
In Under-18 girls’ singles Hasali Gajaba beat Sethmi Sumanaweera 6-2, 6-0 to book a semi-final place.
In the Under-18 boys’ singles encounters Kavisha Rathnayake (beat Hasal Ahangama 4-6, 7-5, 10-4), Chathurya Nilaweera (beat A. Abeywickrama 6-4, 6-1), Thehan Wijemanne (beat Vichinthaya Nilaweera 6-0, 6-4) and Zaidh Zihar (beat Janith Munasinghe 6-1, 6-0) registered victories. (RF)
