Sajith says most MPs do not want a change

Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa yesterday stated that the 148 votes cast in favour of Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, electing him as Deputy Speaker, had proved that most MPs had no wish to change the country’s failed political system.

“In fact, they will do anything to maintain the status quo,” Premadasa said, issuing a statement.

Given below is his statement: “What we are up against, as Opposition, is a media that is owned, politicians that are owned, and the “independents” were bought over long ago. There is no “political strategy” that will fix that. There is only truth to expose.

“SJB will stick to its course. This means more truth will come spilling out in the coming days. The NCM is about holding this regime accountable, it is not about dictating conditions to the SJB.

“Let the NCM reveal the true nature of the beast. The MPs that will vote in favour of the current leadership will do so for their own survival. But it will reveal those that will choose their own survival over holding this corrupt regime accountable.

“We will not form an Interim Government with those that want it only so they can dig themselves out of their holes, secure positions, and tide out the tough times.

“Why should this whole country and its people make the ultimate sacrifice only to support a corrupt and inefficient Government? Why should we do anything to keep the Rajapaksa’s going? Why should SJB just go along with the “deals”?

JUST RESIGN so this country can finally move forward.”
