The Prisons Department is currently considering a request from suspended police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is under protective custody, to have meals brought from his home, Prisons Spokesman and Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake said.

Tennakoon, who was arrested in connection with a shooting incident outside a hotel in Weligama, requested permission for his meals to be delivered from home during his time in custody.

A warrant for Tennakoon’s arrest was issued after the February shooting, and he was taken into custody 20 days later after he surrendered to the Matara Magistrate’s Court.

During recent court proceedings, Tennakoon was remanded to protective custody, with his detention extended until 03 April. As of now, he is held at the Dumbara Prison.

The Prisons Department is reviewing the request, with further decisions expected to be made in due course, Dissanayake said.
