Ranil won’t contest general election, but Sajith will
The UNP yesterday (23) announced that its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe wouldn’t contest the forthcoming parliamentary election.
The announcement was made in the wake of SJB leader Sajith Premadasa’s declaration that he would be the prime ministerial candidate of the SJB
The parliamentary election is expected to be held later this year.
Deputy UNP leader Ruwan Wijewardene and Chairman of the party Wajira Abeywardena confirmed Wickremesinghe’s decision taken in the immediate aftermath of the debilitating defeat suffered by the UNP leader at the presidential election.
Addressing the media outside the Opposition Leader’s Office, Premadasa ruled out the possibility of any rapprochement with Wickremesinghe under any circumstances.
